In 1984, after a spell of nearly 10 years at the
National Theatre and 2 years of supervising numerous West End shows, I
decided it was time to open a costume making company near to the heart
of London’s Theatre Land.
After creating costumes for an
assortment of theatre productions it was not long before Academy
started branching out into commercials, television and inevitably the
film world.
The huge success and reputation of the company led
to expansion and the creation of Academy’s rentals department. Although
we initially hired out an assortment of periods and types of costume we
eventually decided to specialise in the 20th century and our stock now
starts from around the 1890s to the 1990s.
Although film has
become the mainstay of our business we are always more than happy to
take on commissions within other media such as: corporate events,
theatre, weddings, commercials, music promos and anything else you
would care to bring to us.
